Vincent played his first soccer season this fall. The kid has some great skills and a love for the game. Beyond defending and passing the ball forward, he learned some huge lessons about sportsmanship this season. It was not easy (for him or his parents) but it is fun to see a work in process be moving in the right direction.

Thanksgiving at the Davidsons
Back to Nebraska we traveled for turkey and family. The kids enjoyed the "good life" Nebraska has to offer. Grandma completed her spoiling for the season. Grandpa added another year to a very blessed life.

Hope
Today is an IEP day.
There will be ten people at the meeting.
All of which I hope have my daughter's best interest at heart.
These days feel long.
I will take two steps back and evaluate the whole picture.
I will resist the urge to hold and protect her.
We want what is best for her to be successful.
We want her to be a success!
We have glimmers of hope, glimmers that she will rise above!

Enough?
How we spent our Saturday night...
Claudia and Eloise we fortunate enough to be invited by a very sweet friend to a birthday party Saturday night. It was a marathon of a birthday party... first swimming, then pizza, then ice skating, then cake, then a movie, followed hopefully by some slumbering, followed by pancakes in the morning and finally home.
Both of the girls were interested in going, and like most typical 10 year-olds had some worries. Eloise was worried that she wouldn't fall asleep and be grouchy the next day. Claudia, at first, was silent but you could see her wheels turning. Who will help me go to the bathroom, who will help change my clothes, who will get me into and out of the pool, how will I get my wheelchair into the house, how will I ice skate, I won't be able to sleep well, I'm allergic to their dog, and so on.
Matt and I have always been encouraging Claudia to attend birthday parties and behind closed doors we negotiate the logistics. We debate who will be Claudia's legs in the bounce house with twenty kids for the ten time that year. And please don't misunderstand, we want more than anything for Claudia to be included and to have some friends. I also don't want to paint an unrealistic picture.
So this Saturday, Matt drove Claudia and Eloise over to the friend's house. He carried our personal ramp over to their door to allow for Claudia's wheelchair to enter. He helped her get into the pool with all of her floatation devices. He helped her get out of the pool and change into winter wear for ice skating. During the pizza feast he gave her a straw and helped her reach the food she wanted. He drove Claudia in our wheelchair accessible van to the ice skating rink. Matt unloaded Claudia and her walker.
I met up with Matt and the girls by the rink to help get skates fitted. Vincent and Julianne were excited to try skating too. I adjusted Claudia's walker higher to accommodate for the blades on Claudia's feet. I donned some skates too. It was my turn.
Claudia and I entered the rink with about 80 other skaters of varying abilities many of whom were also using "walkers". I helped support Claudia's trunk while steering the walker and avoiding the 80 other skaters. At times Claudia's knees would buckle and I would need to help her straighten those too. We went around and around the rink fast enough to feel the cool breeze in our hair. (a novel concept for many native Arizonians) I had a good time and I sure hope Claudia did too.
Matt and I would do just about anything to help Claudia experience a full life. It hurts when we see her on the sidelines. It hurts her too. This year we have noticed more and more that Claudia seems content to sit out or that keeping up is just too much work. On some level I understand that feeling too... especially when I see her face while she is holding on with everything she has just to keep herself upright on those blades.

Midwest
For summer vacation we loaded up the troops and flew back to Wisconsin. A couple of things struck me: The first being just how GREEN the Midwest is this time of year! Second it is challenging to see half of the friends and family that you have in a short time. Without further delay I will share some of my favorites.

Sky-Y
Eloise is off to Y camp for a week. I'm sure she will have a terrific time. Letting go is just as difficult as many parents before me have described. I'm proud and happy for her at the same time fighting off the urge to grab her up and keep her home. This week, I hope flies by and Saturday brings good stories of fun times.

San Diego
My little beach babe loved digging in the sand and running into the water.
We were lucky to be armed with information on checking out a beach wheelchair for the day. As lovely Claudia is modeling for us. This is at Coronado Beach.
Vincent would not leave the poor sea gulls rest. It proved entertaining for him and the other beach goers.
While Dad was away at the conference we explored Balboa Park. We really had a marvelous time and left plenty to visit for the next time.
So lucky for us to be able to go behind the scenes at SeaWorld to check out some very interesting animals. Thank you very much Brieanne!

Dad
I realize it is not close to Father's Day. I also realize that I have let one too many days go by without telling my Dad that I love him and that I appreciate him. I was having this very conversation with a dear friend last Thursday. I was telling Judy about my Dad. How my Dad has this amazing ability to handle any car question I come across. How my Dad would patiently help me with any project even if he doesn't quite agree with my bull-headed idea. Somehow he keeps this amazing memory for random facts. That my Dad has some awesome hobbies like keeping a lush garden, flying small planes, refereeing soccer, cooking and watching just about any sport on T.V.
I was telling Judy that I have guiltily been super preoccupied with my "own" life and tending to my own children that I have overlooked expressing my gratitude. Judy graciously reminded me that I do show some appreciation to my parents by the choices I make and the actions I take. She is so kind.
I told her that my dad really irritates me. Especially when I have watched his health slowly decline. He has such a love of life that I want him to be able to share that passion.
My Dad has taught me to be an honest person. A person that is loving and loyal. A person that genuinely cares for others. He doesn't help in the same way my mom does but he would cook a big pot of soup or fix your toilet in a heartbeat.
Thankfully I inherited a few of his talents. It's no accident that I can figure out many of Claudia's mechanical issues on her wheelchair. My Dad is the one who first introduced me to Click and Clack. I'm sure those early years when he flew me up into the air in a little plane helped to develop my sense of direction and navigation skills.
I used to hate his incessant whistling but I can see that there will be a day when that annoying whistling will remind me of him. And I do like to whistle. Whistling and any big bowl of popcorn will certainly remind me of you.
I know there is a season for everything. It didn't completely surprise me to hear you were admitted to the hospital on Friday.
I do however selfishly want you to be healthy and to overcome this hiccup. Dad, Vincent needs you to watch him score a goal. Julianne will likely be a great gardener someday with your advice. And Claudia, well, she thinks that hospitals are horrid and that you should do everything possible to get out. Eloise loves her papa too.
We all love you Dad. Be well.

You just have to laugh
| Vincent interpretation of "love" following his older sister's crash sex education course. |
Fast forward I send Eloise, Vincent and Julianne to school. Claudia and I load into the van to go downtown to CRS (Children's Rehabilitative Services). We arrive without an event and I check my phone. Voicemail from the pediatrician that Vincent has a positive strep culture and she is calling in amoxicillin. Feeling obligated I call the nurse at school to let her know. She pulls Vincent from class. He already attended school all day Monday, but now he sits in the nurse's office for 2+ hours until I can get back up to school to retrieve him...
At CRS the usual somewhat depressing scene unfolds. An assumed foster mom is juggling two kids at the counter while she haggles about her appointment being rescheduled without her knowledge. I happen to know that the said doctor is on vacation to Hawaii. I kept my mouth shut.
Claudia's appointment goes well and we are cleared from 6 months. Back in the car to school to switch out kids.
I walk Claudia into school, sign her in, and help set-up her lunch. Vincent has been entertaining the entire front office with jokes! Guess that Big Book of Jokes has come in handy. Claudia pulls into place in the noisy cafeteria just in time for me to see daughter number 2 with huge tears in her eyes. Is it a delayed concussion? Likely not but forgetful Eloise has left her violin at home.
So into the van Vincent and I go to Walgreens to get the amoxicillin picked-up. Home and back to school with violin in hand. I even got a smile from said child.
Now it's off to the post office to mail the twenty or so page appeal for Claudia's stander. It is not a BMW just a stander that I'm asking for... Crossing my fingers while I eat a few Dove chocolates.
