I realize it is not close to Father's Day. I also realize that I have let one too many days go by without telling my Dad that I love him and that I appreciate him. I was having this very conversation with a dear friend last Thursday. I was telling Judy about my Dad. How my Dad has this amazing ability to handle any car question I come across. How my Dad would patiently help me with any project even if he doesn't quite agree with my bull-headed idea. Somehow he keeps this amazing memory for random facts. That my Dad has some awesome hobbies like keeping a lush garden, flying small planes, refereeing soccer, cooking and watching just about any sport on T.V.
I was telling Judy that I have guiltily been super preoccupied with my "own" life and tending to my own children that I have overlooked expressing my gratitude. Judy graciously reminded me that I do show some appreciation to my parents by the choices I make and the actions I take. She is so kind.
I told her that my dad really irritates me. Especially when I have watched his health slowly decline. He has such a love of life that I want him to be able to share that passion.
My Dad has taught me to be an honest person. A person that is loving and loyal. A person that genuinely cares for others. He doesn't help in the same way my mom does but he would cook a big pot of soup or fix your toilet in a heartbeat.
Thankfully I inherited a few of his talents. It's no accident that I can figure out many of Claudia's mechanical issues on her wheelchair. My Dad is the one who first introduced me to Click and Clack. I'm sure those early years when he flew me up into the air in a little plane helped to develop my sense of direction and navigation skills.
I used to hate his incessant whistling but I can see that there will be a day when that annoying whistling will remind me of him. And I do like to whistle. Whistling and any big bowl of popcorn will certainly remind me of you.
I know there is a season for everything. It didn't completely surprise me to hear you were admitted to the hospital on Friday.
I do however selfishly want you to be healthy and to overcome this hiccup. Dad, Vincent needs you to watch him score a goal. Julianne will likely be a great gardener someday with your advice. And Claudia, well, she thinks that hospitals are horrid and that you should do everything possible to get out. Eloise loves her papa too.
We all love you Dad. Be well.
